Cursor vs. Claude Code: Which One Should Designers Actually Care About?

One tool wants you watching every edit as it happens. The other wants you to walk away and come back to a finished draft. Here's what that difference actually means for a design handoff.

Every few weeks a developer on the team says one of these two names like it settles an argument, and every time, a designer nearby nods along without really knowing what’s being compared. Fair enough — neither tool was built with designers in mind. But the choice between them changes how your handoff actually goes, which makes it worth understanding even if you’ll never open either one yourself.

Here’s the short version: one of these tools wants you sitting next to it while it works. The other wants you to walk away and come back to a finished draft.

The same job, two different relationships to control

Cursor is a code editor — a fork of the familiar VS Code, rebuilt with an AI assistant woven through it. You stay in the driver’s seat. It suggests, autocompletes, edits inline, and you approve or adjust as you go. It feels like working alongside someone, not handing something off to them.

Claude Code takes the opposite posture. It runs in the terminal, not a visual editor, and it’s built for autonomy — you describe the outcome, it plans the steps, executes across however many files that takes, and comes back with something to review. Less like a pair-programming partner, more like a colleague you handed a ticket to and checked in on later.

Neither posture is objectively better. It depends entirely on the size of what’s being built.

Where this actually shows up in a design handoff

A small UI change — adjusting a component’s states, fixing spacing that drifted from the tokens, tweaking a single flow — is Cursor’s territory. The developer can see the file, watch the suggestion land, and correct it immediately if it drifts from what the design intended. Tight feedback loop, low risk, fast.

A bigger build — a new page built from scratch off a Figma file, one that touches routing, several components, and existing app logic — is where Claude Code tends to pull ahead. It can read the whole codebase at once, understand how the new screen needs to fit into what already exists, and produce a genuinely complete first pass instead of a series of small edits stitched together. The tradeoff is that you’re trusting more distance between your original design intent and what comes back, so the review pass afterward matters more, not less.

We’ve started asking a simple question before a project kicks off: is this an edit or a build? Edits go to whichever tool the developer prefers day-to-day. Builds increasingly go through an agent-first tool, because the alternative — a developer manually translating twelve screens file by file — is exactly the slow, error-prone step these tools were built to remove.

What actually changes for the design side

None of this changes what a designer hands over. A clean file, consistent components, and named tokens matter just as much regardless of which tool a developer reaches for — arguably more, because both tools are only as good as the structure they’re given. A messy file with unnamed layers and ad hoc spacing will produce a messy result no matter how capable the tool is.

What does change is the shape of the conversation after handoff. With an inline tool, feedback happens in small, constant increments while the developer works. With an agent-first tool, feedback happens in one concentrated review once the draft is back — closer to reviewing a first pass than co-piloting a build. Knowing which mode a project is in tells you when your input is actually useful versus when you’re better off waiting for something to react to.

The honest answer

If someone asks which tool is “better,” the honest answer is that it’s the wrong question. Cursor is the better choice when you want visibility and control at every step. Claude Code is the better choice when the job is big enough that stepping back and reviewing a finished draft is faster than supervising every line. Most teams doing real client work will end up using both, for different sizes of problem — the interesting shift isn’t which one wins, it’s that designers now have a reason to know the difference at all.
